Salmon feed delivered in recyclable bulk bags with the boom truck. It used to come in forty 25kg bags but this is much more efficient and environmentally friendly.
The fish are fed extruded pellets rich in oily fishmeal, fish oil, blood and bone, dried milk and wheat meal as a carbohydrate source. Omega3 content is from either wild-caught fishing bycatch or increasingly from more sustainable plant based sources. For delicious oily orange fish the feed contains astaxanthin which is a reddish pigment that belongs to a group of chemicals called carotenoids. It occurs naturally in certain algae and causes the pink, orange or red colour in salmon, trout, lobster and shrimp. It is also an antioxidant available as a health supplement for humans.
